That Card Machine Guy

A clearer look at card costs

5 reasons UK businesses are reviewing their card machine costs

From hard-to-spot fees to slow payouts, discover what may be costing your business money — and how a free, no-obligation review can help you understand the full picture.

Most owners are busy running their business, not decoding merchant statements. Sometimes a closer look reveals charges worth questioning. Sometimes it confirms the deal is already competitive.

01 · Start with evidence

The costs can hide in plain sight.

A card statement can spread the real cost across transaction rates, per-payment fees, terminal rental, PCI-related charges and monthly service costs. A headline rate rarely tells the whole story.

That is why the examples above look at real customer reviews and their published case studies, rather than a made-up industry average. A close look may uncover an opportunity; it can also confirm that staying put is the sensible choice.

“The process of application to set up was seamless and so easy thanks to his knowledge of the system.”

02 · Make the numbers useful

What if payments cost less and do more?

A review looks at the full arrangement, not just a single percentage. It can help identify potentially avoidable monthly charges, compare processing costs, flag equipment that is letting you down and check whether settlement timing suits your cash flow.

When a recurring £25 monthly cost can genuinely be removed, that is £300 across 12 months. The arithmetic is simple; whether a charge can be removed or a better arrangement is available depends on your statement and agreement.

Better reliability and smoother checkout can also make a difference to staff time and the customer experience. Not every business needs a new provider. Every business deserves a clear view of what it pays and what it gets.

03 · Useful payment tools

The technology should earn its place.

I supply Dojo payment solutions. The right features depend on your business and account; availability and terms can change.

Faster authorisation

Go Max is designed for fast transactions, helping keep checkout moving. Actual speed varies with transaction and network conditions.

A connection back-up

On supported setups, a terminal can use Wi-Fi and switch to 4G if broadband drops, subject to mobile coverage and service terms.

Quicker access to takings

Next-working-day settlement options can help with day-to-day cash flow. Weekend or bank-holiday transfers depend on eligibility, bank processing and account terms.

A terminal that fits the day

Portable models such as Dojo Go Max can suit counters, showrooms or service areas where a dedicated terminal is useful.

Payment links

Send a payment request remotely for deposits, invoices or follow-up balances, where available on your account.

Tap to Pay and app reporting

Eligible businesses may accept contactless payments on a compatible iPhone and view payment activity through the business app.

Features, settlement schedules and eligibility are subject to current Dojo product information, your account, bank and applicable terms. For eligible businesses, Dojo may contribute towards contract exit fees, potentially up to £3,000 under a qualifying offer. The amount, eligibility and terms can change; confirm the current offer with Ben before relying on it. See Dojo’s exit-fee information.

04 · Advice with a person behind it

I’ve been on your side of the counter.

I’m Ben. I spent over 18 years running my own successful retail business, so I know how closely regular costs and supplier decisions can affect a small business.

That experience shapes how I review card processing: start with the actual statement, explain the figures plainly and compare the overall arrangement, not a sales headline.

I’m a Dojo partner, not a whole-market comparison site. I supply and support Dojo products, and I’ll be clear about that. My advice is personal and straightforward: if your current deal is already competitive, I’ll tell you to stay put.

I’m based in Ely and support businesses across East Anglia, with remote support available nationally. Motor trade is a particular area of experience, but this review is for any UK business accepting card payments.

Just the essentials to get started. You can ask a question without uploading a statement.

PDF, JPG, PNG, spreadsheet or Office file, up to 6 MB. Don’t send card numbers or passwords; redact anything unrelated to the review. The existing enquiry system emails the form and attached statement securely; neither is stored on this website.

Your details and any statement are submitted over HTTPS for the review and handled as described in the Privacy Policy. Relevant enquiry information may be shared with Dojo; see the policy for details.

Straight answers

A few useful answers.

Can a merchant statement review really be free?

Yes. The review is free and there is no obligation to switch. I will explain what I find and whether a change appears worthwhile.

Do I have to change provider if you find a better option?

No. You decide what to do. If your current arrangement is competitive, I will say so; a review does not commit you to a new provider.

What should I send for a card machine fee review?

A recent merchant statement is the best starting point. If equipment rental is billed separately, include that bill too. You can redact unrelated personal or account information before sending it.

What costs do you check?

I look at the full cost of accepting cards: transaction rates and per-payment charges, terminal rental, monthly account or service fees, PCI-related charges, settlement arrangements and relevant contract terms.

Do all businesses save money by switching?

No. Results depend on your business, card mix, turnover, contract and current pricing. Some businesses are already on a good deal, and I will tell you if that is the case.

Can I use the review if my business is outside East Anglia?

Yes. Ben is based in Ely and supports businesses across East Anglia, with remote advice and support available nationally.
