Motor trade card payments

Card machine fees for garages & motor traders

Vehicle deposits, workshop bills and handover balances can make card payments a big part of your day. A proper review checks the whole cost and how your payment setup works in practice.

I’ve spent more than 20 years around the motor trade. Send a recent merchant statement and I’ll explain what you’re paying, whether there may be room to improve, and what your options look like. No obligation to switch.

01 · When the payment is a big one

Large transactions need the full picture.

Vehicle sales, deposits, repairs and service invoices can mean fewer but higher-value card transactions. In that situation, the percentage rate matters, but it is not the only number to check.

A statement review should look at transaction pricing, fixed authorisation charges, terminal rental, account fees, the debit and credit card mix, settlement terms and contract dates. Even a small difference may affect the comparison, depending on your actual figures.

For a busy dealership, a payment that is approved and settled smoothly can matter as much as the headline rate. The review is based on your statement and your working day, not a generic online quote.

02 · Collect payment beyond the counter

The customer can pay before the handover.

Payment links let you request a card payment remotely, where the service is available on your account. For a motor trader, that may be useful for a vehicle deposit, a repair balance or a customer who wants to settle before collecting their car.

A link is another payment route, not a replacement for every terminal. You’ll want to check the fees, transaction limits, customer journey and settlement terms that apply to your account.

Different garages. Different answers.

The case studies show why the right review starts with the actual statement, not a promise.

MB Motors NI

£3,036 annual saving reported

The statement showed that debit cards made up 92% of transactions. The case study says a pricing structure better aligned to that mix drove the saving. It also describes easy payment links and a useful transaction app.

Ben Buey · Motor trade experience

04 · Someone who knows the trade

I know a garage is more than the till.

I’m Ben Buey. I’ve worked around the motor trade for more than 20 years and ran my own retail business for almost 18 years.

I understand why a garage may need to take a vehicle deposit, settle a workshop invoice or handle a high-value sale without holding up a customer handover. I start with the real figures and the way your business operates.

I’m a Dojo partner and supply Dojo payment solutions. I’ll be clear about that, and I won’t suggest changing provider unless the complete comparison makes practical sense. If your current deal is good, I’ll tell you.

Based in Ely, I support motor traders across East Anglia and remotely across the UK.

Quick answers

Garage payment questions.

Are card machines suitable for large garage payments?

The right setup depends on your transaction profile, provider limits and underwriting. Tell Ben how you take deposits and larger balances so he can check whether the proposed arrangement fits your business.

Can a garage take a deposit with a payment link?

Payment links can be useful for requesting deposits or balances remotely, for example before a vehicle handover. Availability, limits and pricing depend on your account and provider terms.

Could I save on card fees?

Possibly, but it depends on your actual card mix, turnover, contract and fees. A statement review compares the full arrangement; it does not guarantee savings.

Do I need to change provider to have my fees checked?

No. The review is free and there is no obligation to switch. If your current arrangement is already competitive, Ben will tell you.
